Introduction
Portland State University has improved its delivery of student programs and services in response to three new challenges: first, adjusting to younger cohorts of students, while continuing to serve the University's traditionally older student population; second, adapting to a social context that demands support services for academic achievement, disabilities, and mental health; and third, incorporating learning outcomes and general education into the mission of the Office of Student Affairs.
Accomplishments
Substantial progress in the use of technology to improve services to students.
Enhancements to privacy and security controls on student records.
Transition of intercollegiate athletics from NCAA Division II to Division I.
Challenges
Staffing in Student Affairs has not kept pace with enrollment growth, hampering the unit's ability to provide services to a changing demographic.
Non-traditional course offerings and co-enrollment or co-admissions agreements with community colleges place new demands on existing student services.
Expanded use of technology requires additional training for Student Affairs staff and adequate staffing levels to maintain Web sites and other data systems.
